Any garden is a work in progress, and there’s almost always plenty to do. Mine is in the heart of the city, on 1200 square feet of deck, four stories in the air, with exposures to the east, south and west. Greg Bathon garden
Each direction has its own microclimate. Five big (7 ft.) tough black pines – really just big bonsais- anchor the southwest corner. A cool stretch of wisteria arbor shelters the long south deck, and a little fountain, from a full day of Baltimore sun, and expands to form an outside dining room in the southeast corner overlooking the harbor in the summer. Vegetables and herbs grow best on the east side, and I can't get much of anything to grow but tall ornamental grasses on the west side because it’s slugged with north winds and hot afternoon sun. I have about two hundred plants of all kinds and sizes out there. A good irrigation system saves me a couple of hours’ watering a day, and gives us a chance to get out of here for a while when the opportunity arises. Greg Bathon garden
Here's what I do that I don't have pictures of:
Cook, seven nights a week when we're home. I'm pretty good at it.
Plan trips. It's a big world, and, there's still plenty of it to see.
Study. In my first year as a candidate for an MFA degree in the Bennington College Writing Seminars.
II’m busy. Baltimore’s a great town.
